Ed Brown, WVU Potomac State College activities program manager with Student Life, left, was recognized as the 2018 Outstanding Staff Person of the Year by his fellow employees at a special reception this spring. Making the announcement was Campus Police Sgt. Mike Cannon, who also serves as the chair of the Classified Staff Council.

KEYSER, WV, MAY 15, 2018 – Edward Brown, D.M.A., was recently named the 2018 Outstanding Staff Person of the Year at West Virginia University Potomac State College. He has served as the College’s activities program manager with Student Life, since August 2016.

In this position, Dr. Brown is responsible for planning and implementing social and educational activities for students. He also oversees the Student Union operations; works with student organizations and their advisors; and serves as advisor to the Student Government Association. He also created the Diversity Ambassadors program, a student initiative that invites student volunteers from different ethnic, racial or regional backgrounds to be matched up with one another to spend time getting to know one another over a semester. The goals are to alleviate any fears, challenge stereotypes and erode divisions between groups through positive engagement and interaction.

Dr. Brown’s nomination stated, “Dr. Brown always puts the students first.  He treats all students with dignity and respect.  He strives to provide the students with a first-class experience.”  The nomination went on to explain Dr. Brown’s participation in a collaborative initiative with the WVU Morgantown campus. “He also teamed up with WVU's SGA and iServe Department to pull off a state-wide service learning project this past fall. He took PSC students to five different locations in Mineral County to perform community service.  The places that received the help were very appreciative of our students’ efforts (as well as Dr. Brown's efforts).”

Additionally, Dr. Brown served in active duty with the United States Navy from 1986-1989 and in reserve duty from 1989-1992, achieving the rank of E4.

Dr. Brown earned a doctor of musical arts in music composition from WVU; a master’s degree in music composition from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky.; a bachelor’s degree in music from Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.; and an associate degree from Camden County Community College in Blackwood, N.J.  He was also the recipient of the Southern Regional Education Board Fellowship.

In addition to a plaque, a student scholarship is awarded each fall on behalf of the Outstanding Staff Member.
